6 Simple Ways to Update Your Child’s Bedroom

What started as a bathroom remodel last fall unexpectedly sparked a full home refresh. After redoing the bathroom and reorganizing the hallway and closets, I realized our son’s bedroom was overdue for an update too.
Jackson turned 11 in October 2020, and while I loved the cozy, sports-themed vibe we created five years ago, it no longer reflected who he is today. Like most kids, his interests have shifted. These days, it’s all about space, Star Wars, and the solar system.
So, this spring, we gave his bedroom a fresh look that feels more age-appropriate and personal—and I’m excited to share 6 simple ways you can do the same in your child’s space.
BEFORE: Plaid & Sports

DURING: Redesigning with Rocky

1. Repaint the Walls
Paint is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to transform a room. We added a soft, neutral base with a bold pop of color to create interest and set the tone for the space theme. Start with bedding or a rug you love, and pull your paint palette from there. An accent wall, trim detail, or mural can also make a big impact with minimal effort.
2. Warm It Up with Flooring
We stuck with our home’s original hardwood floors and added a neutral woven rug to keep things cozy and flexible. While there were plenty of themed rugs to choose from, I wanted something timeless that wouldn’t lock us into a specific look as Jackson grows.
3. Update Bedding + Window Treatments
This is where I began. I chose bedding that felt modern and age-appropriate, without going overboard on the theme. We accented with space-themed pillows and accessories instead.
Tip: Choose versatile bedding and layer in fun, themed touches that are easier (and less expensive) to swap out later.
4. Refresh Furniture with Paint + Personality
A fresh coat of paint gave Jackson’s desk and nightstand a second life. We added a navy space-inspired desk chair to complete the look. You’d be amazed how just a little paint can breathe new life into tired pieces. Not ready for new furniture? Try painting drawers, swapping knobs, or rearranging pieces to create a new layout.
5. Declutter + Reorganize the Closet
Closets often become clutter zones. We cleared everything out, repainted, and reorganized only the items Jackson truly needed. Now, everything has a place—and it’s much easier for him to keep tidy.
This is a great time to involve your child, too! Teach them how to let go of what they’ve outgrown and organize what they love.
6. Reimagine the Space Layout
Sometimes a room just needs a new flow. While we didn’t have many layout options due to windows and doorways, we still took a critical look at how the space functioned. Could the bed move? Did he need a larger workspace? What items weren’t being used? A thoughtful space plan can make a small room feel twice as big.
