A few years ago, our backyard was just that—a backyard. It had potential, but no real personality. We’d step outside, but we didn’t linger. That all changed the moment we decided to make it more than just a pass-through space—and instead, turn it into a retreat where we could unwind, gather, and enjoy the beauty of Maine evenings.
The transformation began with the removal of two existing windows to make way for a sliding door in our main living space. That one decision completely shifted the flow between indoors and out. From there, we added a deck, giving us the perfect platform for dining, lounging, and soaking in the fresh air. And finally, the pergola—simple, timeless, and just the architectural touch we needed to make the space feel defined and welcoming.
Below, I’m sharing a few snapshots of the process—from construction to styling—plus five design details that made all the difference in how this space looks and feels today. Whether you’re starting from scratch or updating what you already have, I hope our story sparks ideas for creating your own outdoor escape.

1. Define Your Space with Structure
Think of structure as the foundation of your outdoor room. Even without walls, you can create a sense of intimacy and purpose. We added a pergola to our deck, which instantly helped anchor the space and gave us the perfect spot to hang lights and create shade. However, if a pergola isn’t in the plan, you can create a similar cozy atmosphere with outdoor curtains, a shade sail, or even tall planters to help frame your area. These elements give the space a sense of "place"—which makes it feel more like a destination, not just your backyard.

2. Layer in Comfort (and Then Some)
If you want to love your outdoor area, it needs to feel as inviting as your living room. For us, that meant choosing deep, cushioned seating with weather-resistant fabric and plenty of throw pillows in playful patterns and calming tones. A soft outdoor rug instantly made the space feel finished and cozy underfoot. We added side tables and a coffee table, so there’s always a place for a snack tray, drinks, or a summer read. And because Maine nights can cool down quickly, a woven basket of throw blankets is always within reach.
3. Set the Mood with Layered Lighting
Lighting is where the magic really happens. We strung warm café lights across the pergola in a canopy style, and it completely changed how the space feels once the sun goes down. We also added a few solar lights along the path and nestled battery-powered lanterns and faux candles around the seating area. The soft glow encourages lingering and adds instant ambiance. If you’re working with a larger space, uplighting landscape features or trees is a great way to add drama and depth to the evening view. It doesn’t have to be complicated—just intentional.

4. Add Personality Through Décor and Styling
This is the fun part—where your outdoor space begins to feel like you. We styled the space with layered planters in ceramic and rattan finishes, filled with herbs, flowers, and trailing greens. A few weatherproof accessories, such as a mirror and a decorative metal wall piece, helped create a finished, styled feel. One of my favorite touches was adding a small bar cart with colorful drinkware and a few seasonal napkins—it’s practical and also adds a pop of charm. Even little details, like a vintage watering can turned planter or a bowl of citronella candles, help the space feel loved and lived-in.
5. Design for Real-Life Connection
At the heart of it all, we wanted to create a place where our family could reconnect—without screens, schedules, or distractions. We added a mini table fire pit in the center of the seating area, and suddenly, we had a natural gathering point for s’mores nights and storytelling. You can build a bench with hidden storage to keep lawn games and pillows tucked away, and create subtle zones: one for lounging, one for dining, and one just big enough for dancing or impromptu cartwheels. The key was not making it perfect, but making it yours—a place that invites connection, comfort, and a little everyday magic.
Ready to bring your backyard to life? Whether you’re refreshing what you already have or starting from scratch, I’d love to help you design an outdoor space that’s both functional and beautiful.
