6 Design Tips for Built-Ins That Are Functional and Chic

Updated: Jul 8

In November 2023, while my son, Chris M. White, a talented Architectural Designer based in Florida (formerly from Boston), was visiting home, we found ourselves watching a movie in our living room. The flat-screen TV was squeezed into an oversized antique armoire that had definitely seen better days and was taking up way too much space.

As we sat there, Chris casually sketched out a vision for a custom-built-in wall unit and fireplace insert—something I had always dreamed about but couldn’t quite visualize. I wanted more storage for our books, DVDs, and CDs, as well as a proper mantel for hanging stockings at Christmas.

Saying goodbye to the old armoire was tough, but the new built-in wall was about to bring style and substance to our space. We teamed up with our master carpenter—also named Chris White (of Wood & Wires)—who turned the design into reality.

Whether you're dreaming of a cozy fireplace or practical storage, here are 6 essential tips to help you design a built-in wall unit that’s both functional and chic:

1. Sketch It Out

Start by taking a photo of your current wall. Then, sketch your ideas on paper. Use painter’s tape on the wall to help you map out dimensions in real space—it gives a much better sense of scale than a drawing alone.

2. Plan for Function First

Think through what you need the built-in to do. Do you want open shelves for books? Cabinets to hide clutter? Media storage? A mantel? For me, it was a mix—display space, hidden storage, and a fireplace feature. Customizing around your real needs is key.

3. Measure Twice

Before your carpenter begins, measure everything you plan to store—books, stereo equipment, board games, etc. Adjustable shelving adds flexibility, but accurate dimensions will save you headaches later.

4. Design for Balance

To make the built-in feel intentional, align it with architectural lines in the room—window heights, door frames, or crown molding. For ours, we centered the TV and fireplace, and carried the trim and baseboards through for a seamless look.

5. Repurpose for Charm

Add personality with repurposed materials. We used a reclaimed barn beam for the mantel, and it gave the space just the rustic charm we were looking for. Salvaged wood or vintage doors can bring warmth and character.

6. Don’t Forget the Lighting

Built-ins are the perfect place to layer in lighting. Think recessed lights, sconces, or small lamps. We even added hidden outlets to plug in stereo equipment and lamps without messy cords.
