6 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Remodeling a Bathroom

This past fall, we finally dove into our bathroom renovation—exciting, yes, but definitely not without its challenges.
While selecting tile and fixtures was fun, the real difficulty came in coordinating the contractors. Timing was tricky (as it often is in tight spaces), and managing the project myself meant extra juggling to ensure each phase went smoothly.
If you’re thinking of tackling a bathroom remodel soon, here are six mistakes to avoid—learned from experience—so your project is smoother, more efficient, and headache-free!
1. Skipping Proper Ventilation
A gorgeous bathroom won’t matter if it’s constantly damp and musty. Always consider two things:
Do you have a window for airflow?
Do you have a working exhaust fan?
We were lucky—our space had both—but upgraded to a double-pane window for better insulation and easier cleaning. Proper ventilation is non-negotiable to prevent mold, mildew, and lingering odors.
2. Removing the Bathtub Without a Plan
Removing our old cast iron tub was no small feat—it took an entire day! But before you go full demo, ask yourself: Do you have another tub in the house?
For resale value, it’s often recommended to keep at least one bathtub in the home. Since we had one upstairs, I felt comfortable replacing this one with a walk-in shower and glass surround to open up the space visually.
3. Underestimating the Cost of Tiling
Yes, there are tons of DIY videos on YouTube—but tiling is one of those areas where precision really matters. A poor installation can lead to major water damage later.
We chose to leave this job to the professionals—and although it was the most expensive part of the remodel, it was 100% worth it to avoid long-term problems.
4. Forgetting About Storage
Good design and function are key. With limited space, we opted for a pedestal sink but added a sturdy woven basket underneath for towel storage.
We also removed a bulky mirrored medicine cabinet in favor of a more modern, open look—but made up for the lost storage with open shelving, baskets, and updated linen closet organization. Don’t overlook where your essentials will live!
5. Choosing the Wrong Flooring
Tile offers a timeless look, but make sure to weigh the pros and cons:
Is it slippery when wet?
Will it feel cold underfoot?
Is it easy to maintain?
We stuck with classic tile to complement the vintage style of our 1940s home, but other options like vinyl, wood-look tile, cork, or even natural stone might suit your space better. Think style and practicality.
6. Overlooking Lighting and Outlet Placement
Our old bathroom was lacking a GFCI outlet—and it made everything from drying hair to charging a toothbrush a daily struggle.
This time around, we carefully planned for multiple outlets and added stylish wall sconces for better lighting. Consider both task lighting (for grooming) and ambient lighting (for mood and function). You'll never regret a well-lit bathroom.
BEFORE: Small and dated

DURING: Down to the studs

AFTER: Bright, functional, and totally worth the wait
